Why I Chose to Have a Projector Over a Television in My Living Room
When I first moved all of my living room furniture in, I realized how long my living room was. You can almost bowl from my sofa to the wall that I chose to put the "TV" on. I would have needed a large television in order to see it comfortably from my sitting area. I knew that a 75-80 inch television was going to be in the thousands so an easy solution was a projector. To make a short story shorter, I chose to have a projector because it was a lot cheaper to.
The more I entertained the idea, the more excited I became. I was like "I might as well go bigger since I'm going the cheaper route." My handyman measured my wall and said that a 90 inch screen was the biggest I can go on that wall, so I immediately went to Walmart.com to shop for one. I saw plenty under $100 but the one I decided on was $139 because I am extra it had a remote control for the screen to go up and down with.
I then researched for quality projectors under $500. In my research I learned about lumens, native aspect ratio, image quality, etc. In that 30 minutes, I became a pro! I then stumbled upon a consumer report voting that a certain Acer 3D projector was in the top 5. Walmart.com had that model too, so I purchased it at the same time that I bought the 90 inch screen. Unfortunately I don't have that projector anymore, I'll save that story for another post. I now have an Epson that is pretty good. I bought it refurbished from Amazon for $249 with a 5 year warranty. I didn't have a warranty for the Acer, so I got smarter with this one.
The projector has sound, but if you are going to have the "movie theater" set up, then you might as well have the sound to match. I found a receiver from Sears Outlet for $199 and lastly, a 5 piece surround sound speaker set used from Ebay for $30 in an auction. So that is $139 +249+199+30= way cheaper than a huge TV.
With the money you save, go and buy that popcorn popper, beverage cooler, theater candy, AppleTV, and other extras to complete your Theater Room. Even hang a movie poster or some cute decor to highlight that it is a theater.
My family and I believe that it was one of the best decisions we made since moving here. Movie nights, playing Xbox Live, award show viewing parties, karaoke parties, etc. are all lit. My neighbors may disagree, but we think so!
